Mr Bill Potter II (USA) - October 2010 Judge
I thank your Club for the invitation to judge at your Celebration of 100 Years Show in October, 2009. Your President, Mrs. Olive Black, asked that I provide your Club with the following brief resume of my involvement in dogs.
I started my involvement in purebred dog shows in 1968 when my wife, Donna, bought me an Irish Wolfhound bitch. We became successful at breeding and showing Wolfhounds, but were troubled by their short life spans. We purchased a Smooth Fox Terrier in 1976, and quickly realized, as with all terriers, that they gave us all the advantages of a small dog, and most of the attributes of a large one. Our first Smooth Fox Terrier had a wonderful show career, wining multiple groups, and several Fox Terrier Specialties. We were hooked. We placed the last few Wolfhounds that lived with us, with their co-owners, and began breeding and showing Smooth Fox Terriers under the Reiver prefix. We bred a number Smooth Fox Terrier champions. Several of them were specialty and group winners. My wife and I later acquired, and have bred a few, Norwich Terriers. I have also stayed active with Irish Wolfhound via their living with co-owners, mostly with Gretchen & Robert Bernardi of Berwyck fame.
I was originally approved to judge by the American Kennel Club (AKC) for Fox Terriers (Smooth & Wire) and Irish Wolfhounds in 1989. I was subsequently approved for additional terrier breeds, and became approved for all AKC registered Terrier Breeds in 1998. I am also presently approved by the AKC to judge the following Hounds: Afghan Hounds, Basenjis, Basset Hounds, Beagles, Black & Tan Coonhounds, Bloodhounds, Borzois, Dachshunds, Greyhounds, Harriers, Ibizan Hounds, Irish Wolfhound, Norwegian Elkhounds, Petits Bassets Griffons Vendeens, Pharaoh Hounds, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Salukis, Scottish Deerhounds, and Whippets. (My application for the four remaining breeds in the AKC Hound Group; American Foxhounds, English Foxhounds, Otterhounds, & Plotts, is to be acted upon by the AKC Judging Operations Department in May of this year.) I am approved to judge Toy Manchester Terriers. Additionally, I am approved for all the breeds in the AKC Miscellaneous Classes: Bluetick Coonhounds, Boykin Spaniels, Cane Corso, Cesky Terriers, Entlebucher Mountain Dogs, Icelandic Sheepdogs, Leonbergers, Norwegian Lundehund, Redbone Coonhounds, Treeing Walker Coonhounds, and Xoloitzcuintli. I am approved to judge Best in Show.
As my involvement with judging has increased, my involvement in breeding, and showing dogs, has decreased. My wife and I presently own one Champion Smooth Fox Terrier bitch and one Norwich Terrier bitch. I am also the co-owner of one Champion Irish Wolfhound male who is a very successful stud dog. He lives with his co-owner Gretchen Bernardi.
I have been active in the American Fox Terrier Club (AFTC); serving as President 1993-1996, Secretary 1986-1992, Governor 1986-1997, and I am presently serving, through the end of this year, as the Show Chairman. I have judged Smooth Fox Terriers at the AFTC National Specialty at Montgomery County Kennel Club in 1994 (entry of 193), and 2004 (entry of 157). I also judged Wire Fox Terriers at the AFTC Specialty in May 2003. I have also judged eight Regional/Affiliated Fox Terrier Specialties throughout the United States. I have judged a number of Regional Specialties and Supported entries for almost all of the AKC approved Terrier Breeds, and at All-Breed Shows throughout the United States. I have judged at 10 Terrier Group Shows across the US – judging Best in Show at the Clubs in Maryland, Arizona, and New Jersey. I have also been honored to judge eight Terrier Breeds at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club, including Smooth & Wire Fox Terriers, in 2005, seven Terrier Breeds at the American Kennel Club Invitational Dog Show, including Smooth Fox Terriers, in 2007, and The Sporting Terrier Club of Victoria in 2006.
I hope that this gives you a quick overview of my involvement with dogs and dog shows. I look forward to traveling to Australia and judging at your event.
Sincerely,
Bill Potter
